Mentoring West is a pilot project designed to build on the existing Making Choices and Step Forward programmes which are working towards social inclusion within mainstream local community development structures. The project will create for community organisations, specifically Community Development Projects and Family Resource Centres, the resource of trained disabled mentors to work with assigned individuals who have self-advocacy capability, to achieve personal life goals within a rights based, mainstream community development context.
This project commenced in November 2006 and run until the autumn of 2007. It is anticipated that six disabled people from the western region will participate, which will involve an experiential learning process including direct training sessions and practice based project work. This stage of the Steps to Participation Programme is funded by Comhairle.
